Claudia Barahona
Claudia Barahona-Fuentes is an associate professor at the Barcelona School of Nautical Studies, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), where she teaches English for Specific Purposes and Professional Communication at both bachelor’s and master’s level. She is also interested in the use of English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) in higher education and participates as a teacher trainer in EMI teacher training courses for engineering content lecturers at the university. She is also actively engaged in different school management committees and for ten years (2007-2017) she also developed different internationalization tasks as Vice-Dean of International Relations. She was appointed gender equality officer of Barcelona School of Nautical Studies between 2010-2017 and from 2019 to the present among whose tasks there is the management of the recently created Commission for Gender Equality.
She holds a PhD in Gender Mainstreaming in Maritime Education and Training (MET) from the UPC. Her research interests encompass the incorporation of the gender perspective in MET and the role of women in the maritime sector. Hence, she has participated in different gender mainstreaming projects at the university. She has coordinated a teaching innovation project to develop a Gender Equality Platform with resources to incorporate the gender perspective in Nautical, Marine and Naval Engineering studies and has co-authored a Guide to Mainstreaming Gender in University Teaching (Xarxa Vives, 2022) for the same field. Among different groups and organisations, she is also collaborating with the World Maritime University (WMU) in Malmö, Sweden, an institution supported by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the United Nations General Assembly, with a key role in maritime and ocean education and research, and an international leading role in promoting women in the maritime sector.
