Marta Peña
Marta Peña is an Industrial Engineering and holds a PhD in Mathematics, both from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC).
She is an associate professor at the Department of Mathematics at the UPC and is a member of the Institute of Industrial and Control Engineering (IOC) at the UPC. She teaches several math subjects in the Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Technology Engineering at the Barcelona School of Industrial Engineering (ETSEIB, UPC) and in the Master’s degree in Teacher Training for Compulsory Secondary Education and Baccalaureate (Mathematics specialty) at the School of Mathematics and Statistics (FME, UPC).
She was deputy director (teacher training manager) of the Institute of Education Sciences (ICE) at the UPC from 2016 to 2019, and she is deputy director (head of bachelor’s degrees and responsible for social commitment) of the ETSEIB at the UPC since 2021. At present, she is a member of the Equality Commission at the UPC and a member of the Linear Algebra, Matrix Analysis and Applications (ALAMA) network.
Her research interests are applied mathematics, engineering education, innovation in higher and secondary education, and social aspects (gender, equity, diversity…) of STEM disciplines. She has participated in numerous research projects, has published more than 100 scientific works and has supervised several master’s theses and doctoral theses. She is a co-author of the guide Guides to mainstreaming gender in university teaching. Industrial Engineering (2020), edited by Xarxa Vives. She is a member of the team that received the first award Menció M. Encarna Sanahuja YII a l’excel·lència en la inclusió de la perspectiva de gènere en la pràctica docent universitària, given by the Government of Catalonia, in 2021. She is the responsible at the UPC of the HORIZON project “Assessment and implementation of Agriculture and Life Science Universities’ first Gender Equality Plans in widening countries” (AGRIGEP, 2023-2025 period) and the responsible of the SOC-STEM research group.
